Gravy is a double challenge — grease plus protein — so it needs a degreaser and cool (never hot) water, because heat sets the protein part.
Lift any solids with a spoon and blot the rest. Keep the water cool from the very start so you don't cook the protein into the fibres. Never rub — rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the pile and frays the fibres.

Step by step (carpet)
- Lift and blot the excess with a spoon and cloth.
- Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over a greasy patch and leave a few minutes to absorb, then vacuum.
- Treat with a teaspoon of washing-up liquid and a tablespoon of white vinegar in 250ml of cool water; dab and blot.
- Rinse with clean cool water and press dry.
- Repeat gently if needed.
Cool water is the key rule here — hot water on the protein in gravy can lock the mark in permanently.

Check the cushion's cleaning code first: W or W/S means the method above is fine used sparingly; S means solvent-clean only, so leave that to a professional. Use less water than on carpet and blot, don't soak.
🧶 Wool & delicate rugs
The fat in gravy clings to wool, so scrape off everything you can while it's still soft and use the mix sparingly rather than flooding the rug. Use cool water and a gentle touch — wool can ‘brown’ if over-wet and some rug dyes run. Test a hidden corner first, and for an antique, hand-knotted or silk rug, don't gamble — leave it to us.

Gravy is fat and protein together, so on a mattress keep the water cool — heat cooks the protein into the fabric — and let bicarbonate of soda deal with the grease. You can't rinse a mattress, so go light: blot, treat sparingly, then use bicarbonate of soda to absorb the rest. Never soak it — trapped moisture leads to mould and smells.

Do gravy stains come out of carpet?
Fresh gravy usually comes out well — it's mainly fat, starch and browning rather than a strong dye. Dried gravy is tougher because the fat oxidises and bonds to the fibres, and rubbing makes that worse. Old, set stains may not lift completely, and we'll tell you that honestly before you spend anything — a WhatsApp photo is enough for us to give you a straight answer.

Does washing-up liquid get gravy out of carpet?
A small amount of neutral washing-up liquid in cool water can help lift the grease, so it's not a bad first move on a fresh spill. The catch is residue: too much detergent leaves a sticky film in the pile that attracts dirt, leaving a grey patch where the gravy was. Use it sparingly, rinse with plain water and blot dry — and don't reach for hot water first, as it can set the meat proteins into the fibres.
