Tea leaves a yellowy-brown tannin mark that can dry into what looks like a permanent shadow. Caught early it usually lifts well; the trick is to blot fast and treat in gentle stages rather than soaking it.
Blot up the spill straight away with kitchen roll, working inwards so you don't spread it. The quicker you lift the liquid, the less the tannin can set. Never rub — rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the pile and frays the fibres.

- Clean white cloths / kitchen roll
- Washing-up liquid
- White vinegar
- Bicarbonate of soda
- Cool or lukewarm water
Step by step (carpet)
- Blot up as much as you can with a clean white cloth.
- Mix one teaspoon of washing-up liquid and one tablespoon of white vinegar into 250ml of lukewarm water.
- Dab and blot gently, lifting the brown colour away in stages from the edges in.
- Rinse with a cloth dampened in plain cool water, then press dry.
- Lift the last of it by sprinkling bicarbonate of soda on the damp area, leaving to dry and vacuuming.
Milky or sugary tea carries a little fat, so the washing-up liquid earns its keep — but go gently and repeat rather than over-wetting in one go.

Check the cushion's cleaning code first: W or W/S means the method above is fine used sparingly; S means solvent-clean only, so leave that to a professional. Use less water than on carpet and blot, don't soak.
🧶 Wool & delicate rugs
The tannins in tea behave like a dye on wool, and a sugary cup leaves sticky residue too — so rinse-blot the rug gently until the water comes away clean. Use cool water and a gentle touch — wool can ‘brown’ if over-wet and some rug dyes run. Test a hidden corner first, and for an antique, hand-knotted or silk rug, don't gamble — leave it to us.

Tea is one of the strongest tannin stains going — the same compounds that stain a mug — so on a mattress blot fast and expect a stubborn ring if it dried in. You can't rinse a mattress, so go light: blot, treat sparingly, then use bicarbonate of soda to absorb the rest. Never soak it — trapped moisture leads to mould and smells.

Why are tea stains so difficult to get out of carpet?
Tea is full of tannins — the same compounds that stain the inside of your mug — and they bond quickly with carpet fibres, especially natural ones like wool. Milk and sugar add a sticky residue on top, which attracts dirt and slowly turns the patch grey. That's why a tea spill blotted straight away almost always comes out, while one left to dry may need professional cleaning.
Does milky tea stain worse than black tea?
They cause trouble in different ways. Black tea carries more tannin, so it leaves a stronger brown mark, while milky tea leaves proteins and fats behind that can hold a sour smell and attract soil over time. Whichever was in the cup, treat it with cool water rather than hot — heat can set milk proteins into the fibres.
Can old tea stains be removed professionally?
