How to Remove Chewing Gum Stains

TRICKY — act fast

Carpet · Sofa · Rug · Mattress — the safe home method, surface by surface, and an honest word on what will and won't fully lift.

Trodden-in chewing gum is a menace because it stretches and smears — until you freeze it. Once it's brittle, it snaps off the fibres instead of stringing out.

⏱️ The first 60 seconds
Don't pull at soft gum — you'll just stretch it deeper into the pile. Freeze it solid first with a bagged ice cube.
What you'll need
  • Ice cubes in a freezer bag
  • A blunt knife / spoon
  • Washing-up liquid
  • Cool water
  • Clean white cloths

Step by step (carpet)

  1. Freeze it by holding a bagged ice cube on the gum until brittle (a few minutes).
  2. Snap it off with a blunt knife while it's still hard, working from the edges.
  3. Lift any residue with a little washing-up liquid in cool water; dab and blot.
  4. Rinse with clean water and press dry.
  5. Repeat the freeze if any sticky bits remain.

A small amount of surgical spirit on a cloth can shift the last sticky residue — test a hidden patch first. Surgical spirit is flammable — open a window and keep it away from naked flames.

By surface

🛋️ Sofas & upholstery

Check the cushion's cleaning code first: W or W/S means the method above is fine used sparingly; S means solvent-clean only, so leave that to a professional. Use less water than on carpet and blot, don't soak.

🧶 Wool & delicate rugs

Freezing works on rugs too, but flex the rug gently to crack the hardened gum rather than pulling at it, or you'll lift the pile out with it. Use cool water and a gentle touch — wool can ‘brown’ if over-wet and some rug dyes run. Test a hidden corner first, and for an antique, hand-knotted or silk rug, don't gamble — leave it to us.

🛏️ Mattresses

Gum freezes off a mattress well because you're working on a firm, flat surface — bag up some ice, harden it fully and pick it away rather than wetting anything. You can't rinse a mattress, so go light: blot, treat sparingly, then use bicarbonate of soda to absorb the rest. Never soak it — trapped moisture leads to mould and smells.

✅ Do

  • Freeze the gum solid first
  • Snap it off while brittle
  • Work from the edges in
  • Test any solvent on a hidden patch

🚫 Don't

  • Pull at soft gum
  • Use heat (it smears)
  • Rub the residue in
  • Over-wet the area
The honest likelihood
FRESH Frozen and snapped off, gum usually lifts cleanly.
TRODDEN IN Deeply ground-in gum may need a couple of goes.
WOOL Be gentle — or let us remove it.

Tried it and the chewing gum mark is still there — or it's a wool rug, a mattress or something you'd hate to ruin? Don't keep scrubbing; that's how a stain turns permanent. We can often draw out what's left with professional hot-water extraction, and we'll tell you honestly what we expect to get up before we start. We usually reply within 15 minutes, prices are fixed with no VAT (rooms from £20, £50 minimum call-out), and we can normally fit you in within two to three days — worth sending that photo sooner rather than later, as the longer a stain sits, the harder it is to lift. Watford family business — 25 years' experience, fully insured — and if you're not happy with the result, we re-clean free. That's our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Common questions

Does peanut butter get chewing gum out of carpet?

It's a well-known trick, and the oils in it do soften gum — but you're swapping a gum problem for a grease stain, which can be harder to get out of carpet. Freezing with a bagged ice cube is cleaner, cheaper and safer: it makes the gum brittle so it snaps off the fibres instead of smearing. Save the peanut butter for toast.

How do you remove chewing gum from carpet without ice?

Anything solid from the freezer in a sealed bag works — a bag of frozen peas or an ice block does the same job. If freezing isn't an option, a little surgical spirit on a cloth can break down the sticky residue, but always test a hidden patch first. Whatever you do, don't pull at soft gum — it just stretches and works deeper into the pile.

Can old, flattened chewing gum be removed professionally?

The gum itself can often be shifted even when it's been trodden flat, but it's harder once it's ground into the fibres, and a grey shadow of trapped dirt can remain where it sat. Honest answer: we can't promise a perfect result on old gum. WhatsApp us a photo and we'll give you a free, frank assessment before you book anything.
