Stain Removal Guide

How to Remove Biro & Ink Stains

TOUGH — often needs professional extraction

Carpet · Sofa · Rug · Mattress — the safe home method, surface by surface, and an honest word on what will and won't fully lift.

A leaked biro or spilt ink looks alarming, but alcohol is its weak spot — surgical spirit dissolves most ballpoint and many inks. The key is to dab and lift, never rub, so you don't spread it into a bigger mark.

⏱️ The first 60 seconds
Lay a clean cloth under and over and blot — don't rub. Rubbing turns a small ink spot into a large grey smear.
What you'll need
  • Clean white cloths
  • Surgical spirit (rubbing alcohol)
  • Washing-up liquid
  • Cool water
  • Cotton wool

Step by step (carpet)

  1. Test first by dabbing surgical spirit on a hidden patch.
  2. Dab the ink with cotton wool lightly dampened in surgical spirit, lifting colour onto a clean piece each time. Surgical spirit is flammable — open a window and keep it away from naked flames.
  3. Work slowly from the outside in — patience stops it spreading.
  4. Wash the residue with a little washing-up liquid in cool water; blot.
  5. Rinse with clean water and press dry.

An old trick is alcohol-based hairspray instead of surgical spirit — it can work, but modern hairsprays vary, so plain surgical spirit is more reliable. Either way, test first.

By surface

🛋️ Sofas & upholstery

Check the cushion's cleaning code first: W or W/S means the method above is fine used sparingly; S means solvent-clean only, so leave that to a professional. Use less water than on carpet and blot, don't soak.

🧶 Wool & delicate rugs

Alcohol-based treatments that work on carpet can strip the colour from a dyed rug along with the ink, so on anything wool or hand-made, take extra care. Use cool water and a gentle touch — wool can ‘brown’ if over-wet and some rug dyes run. Test a hidden corner first, and for an antique, hand-knotted or silk rug, don't gamble — leave it to us.

🛏️ Mattresses

Ink spreads the moment it's wetted, so on a mattress dab around the edge of the mark and work inwards — and accept that biro on bedding fabric often leaves a shadow. You can't rinse a mattress, so go light: blot, treat sparingly, then use bicarbonate of soda to absorb the rest. Never soak it — trapped moisture leads to mould and smells.

✅ Do

  • Test the solvent on a hidden patch
  • Dab and lift, never rub
  • Swap to clean cotton wool often
  • Work from the outside in

🚫 Don't

  • Rub — it spreads the ink
  • Soak solvent into the backing
  • Use bleach
  • Over-wet the area
The honest likelihood
FRESH Fresh ballpoint usually lifts well with surgical spirit.
DRIED Older ink can leave a faint shadow.
WOOL Test carefully — or let us handle it.

Tried it and the biro & ink mark is still there — or it's a wool rug, a mattress or something you'd hate to ruin? Don't keep scrubbing; that's how a stain turns permanent. We can often draw out what's left with professional hot-water extraction, and we'll tell you honestly what we expect to get up before we start. We usually reply within 15 minutes, prices are fixed with no VAT (rooms from £20, £50 minimum call-out), and we can normally fit you in within two to three days — worth sending that photo sooner rather than later, as the longer a stain sits, the harder it is to lift. Watford family business — 25 years' experience, fully insured — and if you're not happy with the result, we re-clean free. That's our 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Common questions

Does hairspray really remove biro from carpet?

It used to work more often, because older hairsprays were mostly alcohol — which is exactly what dissolves ballpoint ink. Modern formulas vary, and many add sticky resins that leave a residue of their own, so plain surgical spirit is the more reliable choice. Whichever you use, test a hidden patch first and dab rather than rub.

Will a hired carpet cleaning machine get ink out?

Usually not on its own. Hire machines rinse with a water-based solution, and ballpoint ink doesn't dissolve in water — so the machine can spread the mark and over-wet the carpet without actually shifting the ink. A solvent treatment has to come first; there's more in our guide to why hiring a carpet machine costs more.

Can old ink stains be removed from carpet?

Often improved, not always erased — ink that's had time to set can leave a faint shadow even after careful treatment. Professional hot-water extraction can usually draw out more than home methods, and we'll tell you honestly beforehand what we expect to lift. WhatsApp us a photo of the stain for a free assessment.
