Children and felt-tips find carpet eventually. Washable felt-tips usually come out fairly easily; permanent markers are tougher and may only fade. Either way, alcohol is your friend and rubbing is your enemy.
Blot, don't rub. For washable felt-tip, start with cool water and washing-up liquid; for permanent marker, you'll need surgical spirit.
- Clean white cloths
- Washing-up liquid
- Surgical spirit (rubbing alcohol)
- Cool water
- Cotton wool
Step by step (carpet)
- Identify the pen — washable or permanent? Washable lifts with water and washing-up liquid.
- Treat washable felt-tip with washing-up liquid in cool water; dab and blot from the edges in.
- For permanent marker test surgical spirit on a hidden patch, then dab it on with cotton wool, lifting colour onto a clean piece. Surgical spirit is flammable — open a window and keep it away from naked flames.
- Rinse with clean cool water and press dry.
- Repeat gently in stages.
Permanent marker is, by design, permanent — you can usually fade it a lot but not always fully, and that's worth knowing before you start.
By surface
🛋️ Sofas & upholstery
Check the cushion's cleaning code first: W or W/S means the method above is fine used sparingly; S means solvent-clean only, so leave that to a professional. Use less water than on carpet and blot, don't soak.
🧶 Wool & delicate rugs
Felt-tip ink spreads along rug fibres the moment it's wetted, so dab from the outside of the mark inwards with the lightest touch you can manage. Use cool water and a gentle touch — wool can ‘brown’ if over-wet and some rug dyes run. Test a hidden corner first, and for an antique, hand-knotted or silk rug, don't gamble — leave it to us.
🛏️ Mattresses
Dab the pen on a tissue first to see if it's washable — washable felt-tip lifts from a mattress with barely-damp dabbing, while permanent marker almost never does. You can't rinse a mattress, so go light: blot, treat sparingly, then use bicarbonate of soda to absorb the rest. Never soak it — trapped moisture leads to mould and smells.
✅ Do
- Check washable vs permanent first
- Test solvent on a hidden patch
- Dab and lift, not rub
- Work from the outside in
🚫 Don't
- Rub — it spreads the colour
- Assume permanent marker fully removes
- Use bleach
- Over-wet the area
Tried it and the felt-tip mark is still there — or it's a wool rug, a mattress or something you'd hate to ruin? Don't keep scrubbing; that's how a stain turns permanent. We can often draw out what's left with professional hot-water extraction, and we'll tell you honestly what we expect to get up before we start. We usually reply within 15 minutes, prices are fixed with no VAT (rooms from £20, £50 minimum call-out), and we can normally fit you in within two to three days — worth sending that photo sooner rather than later, as the longer a stain sits, the harder it is to lift. Does Sharpie or permanent marker come out of carpet?
Usually it fades rather than vanishes — permanent marker is built to bond, so surgical spirit will often lift a good deal of the colour but rarely all of it. Professional extraction can sometimes take it further, and we'll be straight with you about the likely result before you spend a penny. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we'll give you an honest opinion.
Can I use a magic eraser on felt tip carpet stains?
Best not to. Melamine sponges work by micro-abrasion — effectively very fine sandpaper — which is fine on hard surfaces but can fuzz and permanently scuff carpet pile. Stick to dabbing with the right liquid for the pen type, and let the solvent do the work rather than friction.
Do washable felt tips actually come out of carpet?
Usually, yes — that's the one bit of good news with felt-tip. Washable pens use water-based inks designed to release, so cool water and a little washing-up liquid will normally lift them, especially while the mark is fresh. If a trace lingers once it's dried, see our full stain removal guide or WhatsApp us a photo.
