The first question with paint is which type: water-based emulsion (most wall paint) cleans up with water if you're quick; oil-based gloss needs white spirit and real care. Knowing which you've got changes everything.
Scoop up wet paint with a spoon — don't spread it. For water-based emulsion, get water on it before it dries; for gloss, keep it contained and don't add water. Never rub — rubbing pushes the stain deeper into the pile and frays the fibres.

Step by step (carpet)
- Lift the excess gently with a spoon, working inwards.
- Water-based emulsion: blot with warm water and a little washing-up liquid while still wet, repeating until the colour stops lifting.
- Oil-based gloss: dab with white spirit on a cloth (test first, ventilate the room), then wash the residue with washing-up liquid.
- Rinse with a clean damp cloth and press dry.
- Dried paint can sometimes be softened first — but set gloss especially is often a professional job.
White spirit is flammable and has strong fumes — open windows, no naked flames, and test a hidden patch. If a large area or dried gloss is involved, it's safer to call us than to soak solvent into the carpet.

🛋️ Sofas & upholstery
Check the cushion's cleaning code first: W or W/S means the method above is fine used sparingly; S means solvent-clean only, so leave that to a professional. Use less water than on carpet and blot, don't soak.
🧶 Wool & delicate rugs
Wet emulsion blots out of a rug surprisingly well with cool water, but once paint has dried into the pile, picking at it pulls fibres — that's the point to stop. Use cool water and a gentle touch — wool can ‘brown’ if over-wet and some rug dyes run. Test a hidden corner first, and for an antique, hand-knotted or silk rug, don't gamble — leave it to us.
🛏️ Mattresses
Check the tin first — a little water can sometimes soften dried emulsion on a mattress, but gloss or solvent-based paint on fabric you can't rinse is realistically permanent. You can't rinse a mattress, so go light: blot, treat sparingly, then use bicarbonate of soda to absorb the rest. Never soak it — trapped moisture leads to mould and smells.

Does white spirit remove paint from carpet?
Only oil-based gloss — dab a small amount on a clean white cloth, test a hidden patch first and keep the room ventilated. Water-based emulsion doesn't need it: warm water and a little washing-up liquid while the paint is still wet works better. Never pour white spirit into the pile — soaking solvent into the carpet backing can do more damage than the paint itself.
Can you get dried paint out of carpet?
Sometimes. Dried emulsion can often be softened with warm water and lifted gradually over several patient passes, but dried oil-based gloss is usually a professional job — and honestly, even professional hot-water extraction can't always fully remove set paint.
